
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th 2000) is an American actress and singer who spanned more than 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her powerful, languid, sultry contralto vocals, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her recording of "Cry Me a River", a song she introduced on her debut album. In addition to receiving a musical notice, London was nominated for an Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her portrayal of nurse Dixie McCall in the television series Emergency!. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her acting career began as an actress while she was an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started on film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in several westerns, co-starring with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) along with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) as well as with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and together with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the middle of the 1950s she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records. This was the beginning of her professional career. The final album of her studio was released in the year 1969. She continued to be a hit as the female character in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) She was married to her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband who produced the show.
